With the increased popularity and trust in the internet, so have the opportunities to make money on the web. We are often asked the question how to make money online? And we are often hard pressed to give just one definitive answer. This is because there is no one single answer to that question.

I often reply with the question of why do you want to make cash online? This is the question we should all be asking ourselves when thinking about starting an internet business. The answers could range from simply having more spending money, to wanting to ultimately quit our day jobs so we can spend more of our valuable time with our families or passions. Remember, the deeper you delve into yourself for the answer to this question, the clearer your picture will be of your intentions and your drive to achieving those goals will invariably be greater.

Once you have figured out your own personal reasons for starting an online business the next step is to determine the product or service you wish to sell and who you will sell to. You should realize at this stage that your product and your target market are a single product in itself. Selling consumer electronics to a 14-21 year old demographic is very different from selling consumer electronics to the 40+ market. Everything from your stock choice, advertisement and marketing style, customer service behavior and online sale arena will be significantly different for both “products”. They may seem like very similar and most people reading this will likely respond with the questions i) why can’t you do both in the one business? And ii) wont I stand to make a bigger profit if I open up my market to more people, instead of restricting myself to such a small segment? Surely you can open up an e-commerce store that caters to both segments and potentially stand to generate greater profits, but you may also pitch your operations so mid-field that your business doesn’t hit home with either of the segments and your sales might be a bit of a hit and miss on account of luck.

These are just the first steps in figuring out how to make money online. From here you must next perform a feasibility study to determine whether your idea will be profitable based on the current market, your competition, the consumer demand as well as the value of your product.
